Unlike the dirt bike itself, it is often unwise to purchase used motocross protective gear. You cannot be sure that the gear is in sound condition, and even an otherwise fine looking helmet could have very small cracks that would render it useless in an accident. Gloves, goggles, helmets, pants, chest protectors, and jerseys are best to be acquired new. Though one should always think of safety first, this also has the added advantage of allowing you to obtain a matching set of motocross equipment. This will be useful if you ever decide to compete in any event, since it will assist spectators in identifying you.

Depending on the area you live in, the steps to take to conquer the beast of learning to ride will change. If you are in an area that permits it, riding around your own yard at first may be best.
